Today's Commerce Department Report: Not Too Good, But Not All Bad

First, the unavoidable facts: Total retail and restaurant sales during December declined 0.4% or $1.4B to $382.9B. This marks the first month-over-month decline since a dip of 0.8% back in June.

However, this estimate does not take into account sales of gift cards. Remember, the NRF stated last year that $24.81 billion worth of gift cards were sold during the holiday season last year.

On another note, lessened retail sales may mean that consumers are using their credit less to buy non-essential items. This breathes life back into the lungs of major creditors that have been decimated as of late by the American consumer's growing tendency to live far beyond their means.

So, does this most recent report out of the Commerce Department mean recession or correction? Only time will tell. But, I'm a firm believer that although a slowdown is upon us, collectively, we can crawl out of this hole during 2008, making it one of the most memorable years in recent history.

One last note, Americans are indeed hunkering down as stated by many analysts recently. While they are not out buying luxury items and high fashion garments, they are on a quest for VALUE. In my opinion, this makes discount retailers, drug store and restraunts ripe for the picking over the next few months.
