Arch Coal, Inc. engages in the production and sale of steam and metallurgical coal from surface and underground mines to power plants, steel mills, and industrial facilities in the United States. At December 31, 2007, the company operated 18 active mines; and owned or controlled approximately 2.9 billion tons of proven and probable recoverable reserves. As of the above date, it owned or controlled primarily through long-term leases, approximately 99,700 acres of coal land in West Virginia; 100,300 acres of coal land in Wyoming; 98,700 acres of coal land in Illinois; 61,100 acres of coal land in Utah; 47,300 acres of coal land in Kentucky; 21,800 acres of coal land in New Mexico; and 18,500 acres of coal land in Colorado. The company, formerly known as Arch Mineral Corporation, was founded in 1969 and is headquartered in St. Louis, Missouri. Arch Coal Inc. (NYSE:ACI) operates independently of Ashland Inc. as of March 27, 2000.
